Graffiti Box Jam Berlin - New Entry!!!

August 8th, 2009 — 10:27am

On Saturday, my girlz and I went to the Graffiti Box Jam. It’s a well attended Hip Hop Festival that happens at the Yaam each summer. Yaam is a great location at the river - always worth going to. Check it out when you come to Berlin!

Graffti Box Jam has all the elements: the rappers on the big stage, End Of The Weak MC battles,  Beelow and his beatboxers, graffiti competitions, and dance battles. I really liked the dance battles! Lotsa people had come to check them out and the vibe was great.

The event goes on for 16 hours, but I left shortly after 6pm after having lotsa fun in da sun! I met a lot of people I hadn’t seen for 6 months due to my trip and all in all had a great time! I still think they should involve more women. Too much testosterone for my taste, but I know Dennis is working on that. There were just too many male artists and the vibe was a little bit too macho for me and that is also the reason why many women I know wouldn’t go.

Doesn’t help when some guy throws girl shirts into the crowd with the words: “Here guys grab them! I know you’ll need them when you come home drunk to your wifey tonight. If you want your food ready seven days a week, better bring her something when she’s waited up for you all night…”

And since I am giving you the link here to check out the Graffiti Box Jam - I hope they will finally take the “Pussy Of The Week” off their website as they said they would. I am Nawtee too - but hey guys – that has nothing to do with Hip Hop and should be beneath you!

Peace out!

Jesus at the Jam

Juli 15th, 2009 — 8:30pm

I am trying to figure out why I am always pissed, when at Hip Hop events cats start thanking Christ for our blessings. Saying that if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be there. That doesn’t really happen in Europe or Asia—except from when one of the US judges (great guy actually – I love him) stands up at an event in Korea and gives the “Let’s all thank Jesus” speech in front of an audience that consists of a mixture of followers of Korean Shamanism, Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Judaism and only 29% Christians. Nice people, mostly great people, talented Hip Hop artists, friends, not some weird Jesus freaks who give that speech, people who just want to share—so why does it piss me off?

Well, maybe it pisses me off, that it is assumed I have to share these beliefs, or that everybody else does. And when the audience starts cheering and I don’t, it makes me feel like an outsider. Aha you think, she doesn’t believe in God! I might, I might not, I might not even be sure anymore at this point of my life what to believe. I sure do believe in Hip Hop though. I have seen the wonders that Hip Hop works. I have talked to many people who told me how Hip Hop saved their lives, one way or another. Hip Hop is a tough MF and takes a lot outta you, but it is also very rewarding. Hip Hop is a saviour. Hip Hop is there for you. Hip Hop is family.

I realised that especially on this trip. Wherever I go, I already have a family waiting for me. Hip Hop is for everybody. Hip Hop doesn’t care if you’re black or white or blue. It doesn’t give a damn if you’re male or female, young or old, skinny or fat; it doesn’t give a flying fart if you’re rich or poor, go to college or work at a car wash. All that Hip Hop cares about is your heart! Are you dedicated? Do you believe in what you are doing? Do you believe in yourself? Are you working hard enough? Cuz that is one thing that Hip Hop definitely teaches you—you can do anything if you really want it, if you believe in yourself and just keep going!

So, why should I feel excluded at a Hip Hop event, being with my family? Hip Hop has many followers, believers, warriors, of all kinds of religions—here in Central America people are pretty much all Christians, so at their events, it’s all cheers when Jesus appears on the dance floor. But what about in a couple of years, when events here will be more international? How will some Buddhist B-Boy from Asia feel? Or a Moslem like Lilou? Who was actually not allowed to eat all day long at the Red Bull BC One in South Africa because it was Ramadan!

I guess these guys have tolerance towards other religions cuz they’ve seen the world, but how does it make you feel to have it thrown into your face that the ones cheering for Jesus are the ones who are gonna be saved and that you poor sucker because you have the wrong beliefs—won’t! Because that is what Christians keep telling me—that I will not be saved if I don’t believe in Jesus—and see—that is something that I cannot believe! That there should be a God who will send all Buddhists, Hindus, Moslems, Jews or whatever the heck you believe in, to Hell for being born in the wrong part of the world and being raised with the wrong believes.

Well, I guess it won’t really hurt Moslems or Buddhists etc. if you tell them that they’ll all go to hell, cuz they know better anyway—they are sure that the Christians are the poor misled suckers that’ll never make it to Paradise. So where the fuck am I headed then? A very good friend of mine always says, “Nika, people need to believe there is something coming after this life, because the big fat nothing is just to scary to live with, but face it—when you die, you rot and that’s it! So whatever you wanna do and whoever you wanna be—make sure you do it in this life, Chances are high, it’s the only shot you get!” So, that’s what I am trying to do with my wild and crazy life—in case some of you were wondering…

So, did we get to the point yet? I don’t think so, cuz now I am asking myself, if these kids believe in what they are doing, if they feel that being a Christian warrior is their purpose in this life, who am I to tell them, “Oh, this is Hip Hop, you gotta check your beliefs at the door before you can get in!” See, now I am the one who makes people feel like outsiders. Do I want that? No! I wanna be a good girl!

Last year, when we made the We B*Girlz compilation and the female MCs from Berlin were working on a We B*Girlz track, I told them, “Try to send a positive message, try not to whine about how hard it is to be a woman, try not to blame the guys, don’t try to be like the guys and do all that gangster hardcore Berlin rap, and please leave religion out” The track we got in the end had lines like “It is waaaaaaaar!” And Lady Scar managed to squeeze in three “Allahs.” I was like, “What the ….!” And told Sinaya that I was not happy about this, but then she told me off and of course she was right. That’s how the scene is in Berlin at the moment! This track captures the different types of Female Berlin MCs to the T and now I am very happy with it!

So—now I feel the point coming up—since I am saying that in Hip Hop there is a place for everybody, I guess there is also a place for the church boys and the Jesus freaks, so next time, I will not be pissed, but cheer with them, cheer for them and wish for them that they will get what they are praying for—and hope that even my wretched soul will make its way into another life or into some paradise or other—cuz sorry girl, I am not really ready yet to believe in the big fat nothing!

Peace!

Nicalibre - 1st International Hip Hop Festival Nicaragua - New Entry!!!

Juni 27th, 2009 — 3:26am

While in El Salvador, I had heard that B-Girl Mizfit was organizing the first international Hip Hop Festival in Managua, Nicaragua, called Nicalibre. Since I am Nika libre – free Nika, I knew I had to go!

The day started off with a B-Girl workshop on stage, while the graf writers were painting outside the venue. Mizfit works with the “Semaforo Kids.” Those are the kids selling stuff at the traffic lights in Managua. She teaches them breaking and a bunch of the kids had shown up at the event.

After the B-Girl workshop there was a crew battle and a solo battle, judged by Milo aka Lil’ Boy from El Salvador, B-Girl Miwa from Brazil and B-Boy Lego from Miami who was actually born in Nicaragua, but hadn’t been back since he left in his early childhood years.

Mizfit did an amazing job, she managed to find sponsors at the last minute and it was a great event!

First international Hip Hop Festival in Honduras

Juni 13th, 2009 — 4:52am

The first international Hip Hop Festival in Honduras was da bomb!!! During the day the festival was taking place in the National Library of Tegucigalpa. People were just jamming and throwing down. And after a while, Milo and Manyu gave workshops. They gave 2 different workshops at the same time in the same room! That was the first time I saw something like that – surprisingly – it worked!!!

There was a graffiti presentation going on in the hall and then the MC shows started. Lots of different talent was displayed – guys, girls, kids, and a crew that mixed their Garifuna heritage into the Hip Hop – a GUY!!! shaking his booty for once – I was happy!!!

At night, when I got to Bar La Caramba, the guys were on TV again – this time it was a big TV station, not like the little place that we went to the night before, where the guys actually managed to wreck the scenery as you could see in one of the pictures.

At La Caramba, there were B-Boy Shows, more MCs, and two really good Beatboxers! One of them was Tiux-Machine http://www.myspace.com/tiuxmachine Quite a show! And TV was also there again. I had the feeling Coco, the promoter of the event, is pretty organized when it comes to media presentation, which is very important! I didn’t see anything else in Honduras apart from Tegucigalpa, where after the event, I stayed for a couple of days to work in the Pizza Hut…

There is a lot of gang crime in Honduras as well. Tegucigalpa lies on one side of the river Choluteca. On the other side of the river you find the city Comayaguela, where according to my taxi driver every family has at least one member in the Mara Salvatrucha.

In 2002 in the city of Tegucigalpa in the Honduras, MS-13 members boarded a public bus and immediately executed 28 people including 7 small children. They left a message written on the front of the bus taunting government officials.

I liked Tegucigalpa as a city, would have loved to explore it more, but hey, a girl’s gotta work! But I know that Honduras is a beautiful country, I went to Roatan and Utila, two of their Carribean islands a couple of years earlier to scuba dive! Wonderful dive grounds and really cheap. I will definitely be back to check out more of this wonderful country and I really hope they get that stuff with their president sorted out soon. Well, I will ask the guys in Honduras what they think about that situation and keep you updated!!!

Peace!
Nika

Trip to Honduras - & I am on TV!

Juni 12th, 2009 — 12:39am

On June 12, I went to the first international Hip Hop festival in Honduras! I went to the bus station in San Salvador where I was supposed to meet with a whole bunch of guys from El Salvador who’d also go to the festival. They have all these flyers up all over Central America educating you about the swine flu and teaching you how to cough – into your hand or into your shoulder – that’s right – not into your neighbours face…

At the station I met DJ Flako from Guatemala. We started to talk cuz we had the same sticker on our luggage – from ZOAD in Guatemala. Flako used to live in Cologne and speaks perfect German, a language that I hardly ever got to speak on this trip.

When we arrived in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, the guys started to cover each others shirts and the local bus station in tags. From the bus station we were ferried to a radio station right away, were the guys did some promotion for the event.

Right after that, we drove to a TV station where we had lots of fun fooling around. We had quiet a bit of time, as the presidents car had just gotten attacked and they needed to cover that first. Yes, the same president that got thrown out of the country a couple of days later. And yes, as you can see in one of the photos, they actually dragged me in front of the cameras – as it was life, I couldn’t really bitch about and refuse…
So hey, I actually was on TV in Honduras!!!

Peace
NN

Hip Hop Concert @ La Luna

Juni 6th, 2009 — 12:25am

On June 6th, there was a concert in a club/restaurant called La Luna, which was in walking distance to my hostel. I went there with Milo aka Lil’ Boy and old-skool B-Boy Gideon. Milo introduced me to the manager of the Club, Kike Huezo and told me that Kike had been the first one to organize a B-Boy battle in San Salvador.

Lots of talented rappers on that stage! I was impressed! It is such a small country, but has a really lively Hip Hop scene with great artists. Unfortunately El Salvador does not have a single female MC though!! That has to change girls!!!

That day there was a big soccer game between Mexico and El Salvador. One of the Mexican sports reporters had said “El Salvador no existe!” – “El Salvador does not exist!”

A cry went throughout the nation! The press in El Salvador was going mad. Street vendors sold face masks in the Salvadorian colours – mocking the Mexicans and their swine flu—and guess what—El Salvador kicked ass! The pupusas did beat the tacos! So lots of flags all over town and also at the concert. Congrats guys!

After the show was over, the B-Boys threw down on stage and even Kike got up there to show some popping and locking!

Peace!

B-Boy Battle in San Salvador

Mai 30th, 2009 — 11:50pm

I know you don’t hear much from me anymore. That’s because I am getting to the end of my journey and am a little stressed out with travelling :)

Will try to update you about where I’ve been asap, but it will be very short info.

OK, here we go:
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America and the most densely populated one. I reached the capital San Salvador on May 28 and the capitol is pretty much all I saw cuz apart from checking out the Hip Hop scene, I spent 5 days at my computer to get some work done and 5 days in the bathroom cuz I got some stomach bug which later turned out to be a parasite…
And then I had to leave because I did not want to miss Honduras’ first international Hip Hop festival – but that’s another story…

Wow, San Salvador! I was welcomed so warmly there! When I got to my hotel, I contacted Milo aka Lil B-Boy, who I had been in contact with since Guatemala. Milo does a lot for the scene. He organizes events, networks with other countries, gets gigs abroad for the Salvadorian B-Boys and in his workshops he not only teaches breaking, but also talks about the history of the culture—he really sticks to the “each one teach one” mentality of Hip Hop. Milo also has the one and only Hip Hop website of the country, www.expresionurbanasv.es.tl which he made entirely by himself. Respect! So like an hour after I arrived at the hotel Milo and Manyu showed up and welcomed me to their city.

On Saturday they picked me up to go to a battle at ROQUE DALTON TEATHER. Great event!  Check out the flyer! I love how here in the Americas they spell the English words the way they would be spelled if they were Spanish!

They hold these events monthly, so the B-Boys and B-Girls have something to practice for. They had a one-on-one B-Girl battle, won by the youngest chica, B-Girl Jasmin. She is on fire!

The crew battle was won by… forgot the name, will ask Milo. The event had a great vibe, I had a lot of fun and got really – I mean really! – drunk at the afterparty!

Peace out to El Salvador!

Guare Guare en Guate

April 14th, 2009 — 12:44am

Coming back from Antigua, I spent one week in Guatemala City or “Guate“ as they call it here. While I was there, I was staying in Posada Belen, highly recommended!! The guys working there are extremely nice and very supportive. The rooms are beautiful and they have free running turtles in the patio.

I don’t think there is so much to see in Guate, but there is a whole lot of scribblings on the walls. The most interesting things were the goat herds. You can by fresh goat milk every day and they will milk it for you on the spot.

While I was in Guate, there were lots of protests from the scooter fraction. There had been declared a new law, that only one person was aloud on a scooter or motorbike. That was the result of all the violent drive by shootings and robberies. If bus drivers refuse to pay the “protection fee” of 300 qutzales = 30 Euros, they get shot.

I hooked up with my friends Kiki and Zoad One from graffiti studio Guare Guare www.guareguare.com
again and they took me all over town on a graffiti tour and got me drunk. Thank you guys! I had an amazing time!

Peace
Nika

B-Boy Battle in Guatemala City

April 11th, 2009 — 4:34am

After arriving in Guatemala City at Posada Belen and losing a mobile phone for the first time, I was being picked up almost straight away by B-Boy Pablo and his friends to go to a B-Boy Battle close to my hotel. A couple of blocks away we found the Bodeguita, a youth club / event centre, where a small B-Boy battle “B-BOYING FEST 09” took place. The boys all insured me there were much bigger battles in Guatemala, this was just a local event. It was great though! B-Boy Banyi from El Salvador was the host and in-between battles MCs performed. They had a One-on-One, a two-on-two and a crew battle. The one-on-one was won by B-Boy Mickey, the crew battle by Big Bang R12 Crew (my friends from the beach party!), and I don’t know who won the 2-on-2.
After the battle we went to Pollo Campero to eat, where I just love the Alitas Picantes!

More info about B-Boying in Mexico will follow!

Peace
Nika
