On March 13, I had a late night out in Oaxaca with Eva. It was my last night and we went to a restaurant where we ate chapulines, little grasshoppers. You gotta try them, they are very crunchy and salty. They were quite tasty, too, but I had a weird feeling because I was eating so many animals at once. We also had a lot of Mezcal and I had to pay for that the next day, when I went on an 11 hour bus ride to Puerto Escondido. I have never felt so sick!! The bus was going through so many curves, it made me nauseous! I later heard from other girls they had had the same problem, but I know these chicas, I bet they had had Mezcal too.
I was going to Puerto Escondido because I had been told there would be a dance battle. I hadn’t expected the bus ride to be so long. I was told it would be like 7 hours, but then it was 11! By the time I got to Puerto, I had actually already almost gotten over my hungover. They had told me the battle would start at 6, but when I got off the bus, it was already 8pm. I grabbed my stuff, ran to the next taxi and told him to drive me to the hotel closest to the Agencia Municipal where there would be a dance event. The driver knew and he told me that they hadn’t started yet. I quickly checked into a little hotel that was right across the road from the venue, packed my camera and ran over.
I had expected it to be a B-Boy battle, but instead it was some big ass crew dance competition with all sorts of different styles. They had a huge stage, and a big crowd had shown up for the event. Some guy and a girl in hot pants hosted the show. They might have been famous, but what do I know.
There were about 14 crews. I didn’t take pictures of all, cuz I was too tired to get off the chair and be on my knees in front of the stage the whole time. Some of the crews were good and some were not really ready for a competition. The program was broken up by performances of local rappers, which I found very interesting. It was not a Hip hop Event, but all the music in the breaks was Hip Hop. One big surprise was the duo “Reaccion.” They seem to be pretty famous and I must say they defnitely had their shit down—singing, rapping, beatboxing, popping, locking, breaking, really talented hard working guys I’d say. They made the girls scream! When they jumped off the stage, the girls ran up to get a kiss or a hug.
When the B-Boys, a crew from Puerto Escondido called “Artilleria BK” finally went on stage and did their thing, I was pretty sure they’d take this. They had a great choreography, and were really professional. One other crew I liked was a bunch of gay kitten called “Felinus.” They had charisma, a great show, and even a message—something about saving wildlife.
After the last crew was done, I knew the B-Boys had by far been the best performers and Felinus had also been great. How would the jury decide? Was B-Boying accepted enough to win against the more traditional dance performances? How about the hot gay cats? What about Machismo? I was very happy when I heard that Felinus came in second and Artilleria BK had won first place! So Mexico is more open-minded than I expected!
Congratulations guys! You deserved it!
Peace!
Nika
